Welcome to TFA
February 4th, 2010WOW!
Pretty much, I’ve gotten my dream job. It happened between classes on a Thursday. My roommate was taking a nap in her room, and my other friend was on my couch. My boyfriend was at work. I had checked the website about fifteen times that day, and by luck logged in before the email arrived in my inbox.
“Congratulations! We are excited to offer you a place in the 2010 Teach for America Corps. You have been assigned to San Antonio to teach elementary school.”
Commence the screaming, crying, calling my Mom, waking up my roommate, being late for class, and shaking for the next two hours. That night, my friends and I went out for dinner and drinks. When I got home around 2AM I decided I couldn’t wait and committed to the Corps.
I’m so excited to be joining a Charter Corps. Even though it’s kind of scary (going into the complete unknown like this), it’s so exciting because we are truly going to affect change as the first group of TFA teachers in San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). What an amazing opportunity.
Over the next two years, I’ll be using this to keep my family and friends up with what I’m doing in Texas. It will be a huge change from Washington DC and from New Orleans. But, I have the opportunity to shape and form lives, and in the process form myself as a more capable and well rounded person.
One more thing: the Saints play in the Super Bowl on Sunday! WHO DAT!
